Searching for Freedom

Freedom of the soul is the
release of extra baggage,
the shedding of the chains we all carry
as we release each link of fear, jealousy,
resentment, grudges, and anger,
while holding on to the things
which are truly important
It is freedom to be responsible to and for
our own thoughts, words, and actions,
without seeking anyone or anything to blame
for the pitfalls that occur in every life
It is the freedom to put yourself first
without apology or guilt,
to pursue the wants,
needs, and lessons
that are necessary
in order to become the
best of whom we are
capable of being
All this isn't easy, although it
seems as if it should be,
but there are times when it's
challenging or downright difficult
Freedom can bring feelings of separation,
even from family members who have grown
used to whom we've always been to them,
or whom they thought we were
Freedom can bring feelings
of alienation from the people
we encounter every day,
since the things which mean
so much to them no longer
hold us enthralled
Money, material possessions,
power, and control over others
are seen as transitory trappings
unimportant and not worth acquiring
I cherish the freedom
I've found in this lifetime,
and I know that one day
I will indeed be
completely free
